Why CSV File Names Matter More Than They Seem To
CSV files have arguably the worst default naming problem of any common file type, because almost every CSV is machine generated by an export function somewhere, and export functions tend to name files with a system identifier and a timestamp rather than anything describing the actual content.
A downloads folder that accumulates exports from a bank, a CRM, an analytics platform, and a survey tool over several months typically ends up with a collection of files named things like "export.csv", "export (1).csv", and "data_20260411.csv", none of which indicate which system or what data any particular file actually holds.
This matters because CSV exports are frequently pulled for a specific reason, tax preparation, a specific analysis, a one time report, and then referenced again later when a similar question comes up. A clear name is the difference between finding the right export in seconds and reopening several candidates to check.
